Every month we recognize one of our amazing volunteers for going above and beyond… and then we sit them down and ask a few questions. For May 2020 we celebrated Sum-Sum Chan, serving on the chapter board as VP of Email Marketing.
We sat down with Sum-Sum this past week to discuss volunteering, AMA and more.
AMA LA: What’s your role with AMA Los Angeles?
SC: I am the Vice President of Email Marketing
AMA LA: What does that involve?
SC: I work with the AMA Los Angeles team to ensure our database of members and friends know about our monthly educational learning events, AMA news and all the benefits of their membership. My goal is to make sure that our email operation is flawless, with high deliverability and engagement. We carefully pour over all the metrics to understand what our members enjoy engaging with and respond to, making micro adjustments as necessary. This year was very interesting as we learned to pivot quickly through COVID. Managing this was a great experience in teamwork and creative solutions.
AMA LA: What is your favorite thing about volunteering for the chapter?
SC: Learning new things from everyone else! I'm constantly amazed by what our board members can do in areas of marketing I’m not as familiar with. Bringing in fantastic speakers, producing marketing videos, organizing events; volunteering exposes me to so much more.
AMA LA: How does your volunteer role reflect what you do in your day job?
SC: I design marketing automation systems based on CRM databases, so this is ‘old hat’ for me, but here I get to be more creative and have full control over testing and strategy.
AMA LA: Where would we find you if you weren’t hard at work right now?
SC: When I’m not designing marketing systems, you can find me at the beach surfing or in my urban garden harvesting veggies and taking care of my three chickens.
AMA LA: Thanks so much for your expertise in our email campaigns! We really appreciate your awesome contributions!!
